A Wilderness Camping Experience
Join us for a rare and genuine wilderness camping experience on the west side of the Isle of Lewis. This is not a campsite in the conventional sense. It is a quiet, simple spot where you can slow down, immerse yourself in the landscape, and experience true solitude.
Set within nearly 5 acres of croft land, the entire site is yours alone for the duration of your stay. There are no other campers, no nearby pitches — just open space, wide skies, and the sounds of wind, water, and wildlife.

A Rare Opportunity
Camping at Croft 5 is intentionally limited to protect the land and preserve its sense of wildness. Availability is restricted to just 28 nights per year in total.
This makes Croft5 a unique opportunity to wild camp with permission, knowing that privacy and solitude are guaranteed.
Rather than fixed pitches, you are free to choose from a selection of natural camping spots across the croft, depending on your preference. Whether you wish to be:
- Close to the stream
- Near the loch (with access to the waters edge)
- Sheltered by the old blackhouse
- Or positioned to take in the wide views over Little Loch Roag (although all spots have this amazing view!)
You are free to find a pitch that feels right for you.

Wildlife, Views and Solitude
The croft is an ideal place for watching eagles and other wildlife, with open views across Little Loch Roag and ever-changing Atlantic light. This is a place for early mornings, long silences, and evenings shaped by weather and sky.
Perfect for those seeking quiet, undisturbed camping with time to think, write, walk, or simply be outdoors

Facilities (kept deliberately simple)
In keeping with the wilderness ethos, facilities are minimal:
- An outdoor composting toilet and a small outdoor sink
- Fresh water container provided for you to fill and use should you wish
- Basic cycle repair tools and spares for touring cyclists
There is no electricity, no showers, and no conventional campsite infrastructure. Guests should be comfortable at being self-sufficient, and prepared for wild conditions.

Is Croft 5 Right for You?
Croft 5 is suited to those who value the outdoors, solitude and simplicity. It is ideal for experienced or confident campers who understand and respect wild places, or someone wanting to practice for their first wild camping experience.
We ask all guests to camp responsibly and follow Leave No Trace principles, helping to ensure the land remains wild, quiet, and lightly touched for future visitors. We also expect our guests to respect our neighbours and keep noise and disruption to a minimum – if you’re looking at experiencing our wilderness camp then we expect you’ll appreciate this.
We especially welcome walkers and cyclists looking for a quiet, restorative place to rest and camp. Whether you are travelling under your own power or exploring the landscape slowly on foot.
If you are looking for entertainment, amenities, or social camping, this will not be the right fit.
If you are looking for peace, privacy, and a rare chance to have a landscape to yourself, Croft 5 may be exactly what you are seeking.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this a campsite?
No. Croft 5 is a permission-based wilderness camping experience, not a conventional campsite. There are no marked pitches, no amenities block, and no other campers on site. You will have the entire plot to yourself.
How many people will be camping at the same time?
Only one booking is accepted at any time. When you stay at Croft 5, you are the sole campers on the land. We do not accept group bookings but will accommodate couples or people travelling with companions (maximum number of two people and tents).
How many nights is camping available each year?
Camping is limited to just 28 nights per year in total. This restriction helps protect the land and maintain its quiet, wild character.
Can I choose where to pitch my tent?
Yes. You are free to choose from a selection of natural spots across the croft, depending on weather, shelter, and personal preference.
What facilities are provided?
Facilities are intentionally minimal. There is no electricity, no showers, and no conventional campsite infrastructure. We provide drinking water and a composting toilet for considerate use (and to avoid other campers or livestock finding your droppings)
Is this suitable for walkers and cyclists?
Yes — walkers and cyclists are especially welcome. Croft 5 is well suited to those travelling slowly and under their own power, offering a quiet, restorative place to camp at the end of the day.
What if there’s a storm?
The weather in the Outer Hebrides is unpredictable, and so you should be prepared for wind and rain, and you may be blessed with warmth and sun. There are sheltered spots (within walled enclosures for example) and so we advise that you choose where you pitch accordingly.
If a severe storm was forecast with danger to life we would obviously be on hand to help and offer emergency accommodation until it has passed. This is wilderness camping however, so the terrain and weather are an essential part of the experience!
Is there car or motorcycle parking?
We expect the site to appeal to backpackers, walkers and cyclists more than car campers. However if you are arriving by vehicle there is a parking spot available. Please note that this will not be near to your pitch and is close to the house, so you wouldn’t be expected to be camping from your car.
We are happy to accept motorcycle tourers and campers and can provide sheltered parking (by prior arrangement) should you wish to leave your motorcycle undercover for the duration of you stay. Again, there is no access to the camp by vehicle.
Do I need to be self-sufficient?
Yes. Guests should be comfortable with wild camping conditions and bring everything they need. There is a natural water source on the croft but we have mains water available, which we would advise using for drinking water.
We may have some spare equipment available that could be borrowed should yours develop a problem, and we stock several types of fuel should you need any when you get here.
If you are flying and are unable to carry fuel, please let us know and we can arrange to have your fuel here for you.
Are fires allowed?
Open fires are not permitted. This helps protect the land and reduces the risk of wildfire. Please bring suitable camping stoves if you wish to cook.
We do have a small fire pit which may be available depending on conditions, but please presume that during the summer months this will not be available.
Are dogs allowed?
Dogs may be allowed by prior arrangement but must be kept under close control at all times, particularly due to wildlife and livestock in the area. It is expected that dogs would normally be kept on a lead, although designated areas where they can be exercised can be made available by agreement. The croft is fenced, but that doesn’t make it spaniel proof!
What is expected in terms of environmental care?
All guests are expected to follow Leave No Trace principles, taking all rubbish away and leaving the land exactly as they found it. We provide a composting toilet to save you packing out your waste though!
Is Croft5 suitable for everyone?
Croft 5 is best suited to those seeking quiet, space, and simplicity. If you are looking for social camping, entertainment, or full facilities, this will not be the right fit.
I have another question, where can I ask it?
If we haven’t covered the answer above then please send us a message via our contact page.
Wild camping, with permission.
We see your camp with us as a chance to experience Uig and the Isle of Lewis as camping should be.
This is a great opportunity for walkers and cyclists to have somewhere they can pitch their tent and explore the area from.
We hope you enjoy your stay!
